The quick answer

A useful nail technician interview checks the services a candidate can perform, how they communicate with guests and how they follow the salon’s working procedures. Use the same job-related questions and evaluation criteria for comparable candidates, then document evidence rather than relying on first impressions.

Define the role before the interview

List the services the new technician will perform, the schedule, expected communication tasks and who supervises the work. Separate essential skills from techniques the salon can teach during onboarding. Review required credentials through the relevant state authority; a training certificate and permission to practice are not automatically the same thing.

Tell candidates what the interview involves and what portfolio material to bring. Keep questions focused on qualifications and the actual job, consistent with EEOC guidance on interviewing applicants.

Ask for examples rather than yes-or-no claims

  • Which services from this menu have you performed regularly?
  • Show a portfolio example and explain your part in the work.
  • How do you clarify a design when the reference image is unclear?
  • What do you do when the requested service needs more time than booked?
  • How do you handle a guest who is unhappy with the agreed result?
  • How do you communicate availability or service changes to reception?

Ask the same core questions in the same order. Follow up where an answer is unclear, but do not turn personal similarity into a hiring criterion.

Use a behavior-based scorecard

AreaEvidence to record
Service fitRelevant examples and skills that match the menu
ConsultationClarifies expectations before beginning
Work procedureExplains and follows required preparation and hygiene steps
Time awarenessRecognizes when to adjust or escalate a request
Team handoffPasses accurate information to reception

Use labels such as demonstrated, needs coaching and not yet demonstrated, with a short note. If arranging a practical assessment, agree its scope and conditions in advance and check applicable requirements before involving clients or productive work.

Make the next step clear

Summarize strengths, training needs and unresolved checks. Compare candidates against the role, not against an idealized person who can do everything. Give a clear follow-up date and record who will verify credentials and references through an appropriate process.

Slotify can help salons connect with trained professionals. Send a specific hiring brief; the salon still needs to confirm fit, credentials and the working arrangement before a start date is agreed.

Common questions

Is a good portfolio enough?

It is one source of evidence. Also discuss the candidate’s own role, current service skills, communication and required credentials.

Should every candidate do the same practical task?

Comparable roles should use consistent, job-relevant criteria. Agree lawful and appropriate assessment conditions before the test.
